September 15, 2023 (MLN): The Cabinet Division will soon reveal its decision about the gas price hike, as Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar informed during a televised interview on Thursday.
"We have constituted a committee, led by the Minister of Finance, to resolve power sector issues as Pakistan is in the IMF program," he said.
He highlighted that within the first 48 hours of the caretaker setup, the government started necessary interventions for all issues related to the power sector.
Within this setup, administrative intervention is in place where necessary, including addressing power theft.
It is important to mention that the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) tabled the summary of increasing gas prices to the PDM government on June 3, 2023, but no decision was made accordingly.
The caretaker government can do it but has not done so yet.
He added that the state has taken severe action regarding the crackdown on the currency market, but these measures should be consistent, and proper mechanisms should be developed.
The state will have to decide if we opt to soften illicit trade on borders and how it will cope with its economic implications.
"Our goal is to control unlawful activity while we are here," he added.
