Self-service functionality the modern employee expects from their HCM technology.

We use three themes when we think of HCM self-service and how it can improve our working relationships throughout our organization; empowerment, engagement and transparency.

What does that mean to an employee? At the end of the day, the employee wants to know, “What will this system do for me?” There are the themes employees can agree are not just for Key Performance Indicators(KPIs)  and process improvements: Time, access and visibility.

TIME

Time is important to all of us. Whether it is time that we invest in our profession as an employee, manager, or HR specialist.  Time is something today’s employees have little of, so it is important to leverage self-service to help time or make decisions faster.  How do you do that? That leads to our next theme: Access.

ACCESS

In a world where everything is just an app, a tap, or a swipe away, access drives engagement, drives positive feedback and gives the employee the “at their fingertips” information that people crave. Self-service features are more important than ever in providing answers to everyday questions.

“Do I have time for that appointment/recital/ vet visit?”

“Will I be able to easily put time on the calendar to care for an aging parent or a returning veteran?”

“Can my partner and I take two extra days for our trip and book the Airbnb now?”

Access makes sure the employee can easily make these decisions. Before there was widespread employee access, they dealt with many issues, including:

“Is scheduling any of these important events and communicating to my manager or benefits team going to be time-consuming?”

“Am I going to have time to email multiple people on a break? What if they are away?”

“Do I have to make a special trip to the office to turn in documentation?”

Gone is the need to ask HR if you have time available to use, what the request process looks like, and whether your manager has reviewed your request. The information is right there, and there is no lag in the process. That brings us to our last theme: visibility.

VISIBILITY

Real-time accruals and self-service options allow employees to feel the security that comes with the visibility of information and remove multiple steps from the process. It will enable your HR practitioners to focus on their responsibilities, benefit administrators to focus on communicating on their cases or leaves, and simplify overall communication. With the proper visibility, I do not have to go to the employee handbook or their manager to ask about the rate for working on a holiday. Visibility into their personal information provides the answers to questions such as:

Did I receive my banked time?

Did my shift differential come through?

Employee leaves, time off, overtime, time in lieu, and the multitude of items in our daily lives become refreshingly clear.

Time invested where it should be, access at our fingertips, and visibility to our secure personal information are the needs of the modern employee. HCM technology must deliver a way to meet these needs and stay on the forward-thinking design edge. The employee’s experience is always an essential building block for your company. That experience builds on all the other themes that make a company a great place to work: Empowerment, Engagement, and Transparency.
